Located
at Vandalur which is
about 30 km from Chennai,
the Vandalur Zoo or
the Arignar Anna Zoological
park, is one of the
largest in South Asia.
It is spread around
an area of about 1300
acres. The zoo houses
a large variety of animals
in simulated natural
environments. It is
well connected from
Chennai by road. A visit
to this place is as
different as it can
be as it is very close
to nature and very informative.
Different species of
birds and mammals can
be seen here. Different
species of deers, monkeys
attract a lot of attention.
Carnivores animals like
tigers, lions, jaguars,
panthers, wolves, jackals
etc can be seen. Elephants,
giraffes, camels, snakes,
tortoises and other
tropical birds and reptiles
also inhabit here.
The
Australian birds Emus
and Crossawary can be
seen here and is a major
crowd puller. The other
attractions include
the Safari Park, Aquarium,
Pre historic animal
Park, Zoo education,
Nocturnal Animal House
and so on. One can take
the battery operated
vehicles to move around
the zoo or take a long
trek inside the Zoo.
The Zoo is open for
8.30 am to 5.30 pm on
all days except Tuesdays
with an entry fee of
Rs 5 per head.
