Vedanthangal
is the oldest bird sanctuaries
in India and is located
in the Kancheepuram district
about 90 km away from
Chennai. The nearest airport
is the Chennai Airport
from where regular bus
services and cab services
can be taken. The place
is well connected by road.
As for the rail connection
the nearest station is
Chengalpettu.
Vedanthangal
is a feast to the eye
during sunset as one
could see thousands
of birds flying back
to their nests. From
the months October to
March, one could see
a lot of migratory birds
from far away countries
like Siberia, Australia,
Srilanka and Pakistan.
The birds which can
be seen during this
period are Flamingoes,
kingfishers. Herons,
swans, grey wagtails.
Sandpipers, moor hens,
egrets, pelicans and
so on. They come here
for nesting and breeding
and by the time the
migratory season is
over, the birds would
have increased in thousands.

One of the important
features of the place
is the concern of the
villagers towards the
sanctuary. All noisy
activities are avoided
here so as not to scare
away the birds.
The Forest Department
Rest House has provision
for accommodation and
several ornithologists
camp there for weeks
for bird watching.
